On April 16, 2013, NIHCM Foundation hosted a webinar developed jointly with the American Bar Association Center on Children and the Law, "The Health of Children in Foster Care: Making Improvements Through Medicaid and the Law." This webinar featured public and private sector stakeholders discussing trends in the health of children in foster care, including their unmet needs and disproportionate cost to Medicaid; a successful state and private sector partnership to improve services for the foster population through Medicaid managed care; and laws that promote the health of children and youth who are in or aging out of foster care, including the Affordable Care Act. Read more...


On July 26, 2012, NIHCM Foundation hosted a webinar, "Fostering Healthy Families Through Stable Housing—The Role of the Health Care System." This webinar featured health and housing experts discussing: the effects of unstable housing on children's health and the scope of the problem across the nation; the potential impact of health system changes, including Medicaid expansions and new funding for community health workers; the efforts of health plan foundations to improve access to stable housing; and additional opportunities for health care stakeholders to advance the health of at-risk families. On April 2, 2012, NIHCM Foundation hosted a webinar, "Creating Safer Schools & Healthier Children: A Model Bullying Prevention Program." This webinar shared how the Highmark Foundation spearheaded the creation of a coalition of experts to implement the largest statewide bullying prevention initiative in the country and how other stakeholders around the country can replicate this unique, model program. We discussed new cost-benefit-analysis data along with the positive results of Highmark's efforts to create safer school climates and healthier, happier children. Read more...


On October 25, 2011, NIHCM Foundation hosted a webinar, "The Business Case for Breastfeeding: Strategies for Health Plans." This webinar presented "The Business Case for Breastfeeding," developed by the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau, highlighting strategies for health plans to educate employers on the value of supporting breastfeeding employees in the workplace and ways health plans can encourage members to initiate breastfeeding and to continue to breastfeed after returning to work. The webinar also shared promising practices among health plans to promote breastfeeding, including worksite lactation programs for health plan employees and programs to provide access to breast pumps and lactation support for members. On June 2, 2011, NIHCM Foundation and the National Chlamydia Coalition hosted a webinar, "Opportunities for Health Plans to Improve Chlamydia Screening." This webinar began by reviewing the current prevalence of chlamydia in the U.S. and the current state of screening. It also addressed opportunities to remove the provider and patient barriers to screening, as well as the role of health plans in promoting and improving chlamydia screening. On May 25, 2011, NIHCM Foundation hosted a webinar, "Partnering to Promote Health Equity for Adolescents." The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act lays a foundation for the U.S. to eliminate health disparities by expanding access to coverage and improving community prevention programs, as well as through specific provisions targeting racial and ethnic health disparities.To explore these and other opportunities to achieve health equity for adolescents, this webinar convened stakeholders to discuss how health plans and health plan foundations can provide the education, tools and resources necessary for adolescents to lead long and healthy lives. On December 6, 2010, NIHCM Foundation and Children's Safety Network hosted a webinar, "Bullying Prevention: Strategies to Support Statewide Collaboration." This webinar brought together public and private sector stakeholders to share lessons learned from the efforts in Pennsylvania and facilitate dialogue on strategies to implement a population-wide public health initiative to spur national behavior and culture change and ultimately prevent school-based bullying across the United States. On August 17, 2010, NIHCM Foundation hosted a webinar, "Adolescent & Young Adult Health in the Post Reform Era." On April 13, 2010, NIHCM Foundation hosted a webinar, "Preventing Prematurity: Opportunities for Health Plans." The webinar convened health plans and leaders in the maternal and child health community who shared innovative programs and explored strategies to reduce preterm births and the associated costs. The rise in the rate of preterm births over the past decades was discussed, as well as the relationship between elective inductions and cesarean deliveries to this rise. Representatives from both United Healthcare and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee discussed their programs aimed at reducing premature births and Paul Meyer from Voxiva spoke on the new Text4Baby program which utilizes text messaging to relay important messages about proper healthcare during pregnancy to promote positive birth outcomes. On December 9, 2009, NIHCM Foundation hosted an important webinar, "Identifying and Treating Maternal Depression: Strategies and Considerations for Health Plans."  This webinar explored the prevalence of maternal depression and the current state of screening for perinatal and postpartum depression.  It included a discussion of the recent recommendations from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA) for the treatment of women with depression during pregnancy.  The role of primary care providers in identifying and managing postpartum depression was also discussed and a web-based training program to educate providers on screening, diagnosis, treatment and referral for postpartum depression was shared.  Finally, the session highlighted a current health plan program to identify and manage depression during pregnancy and coordinate care following a depression diagnosis to ensure healthy pregnancies and deliveries.  On August 26, 2009 NIHCM Foundation hosted a webinar, "Improving Early Identification & Treatment of Adolescent Depression: Considerations and Strategies for Health Plans." This webinar explored the current state of adolescent mental health, with a particular focus on adolescent depression. It also discussed the current guidelines, including the recent U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendation, and reviewed effective screening tools for primary care providers to identify depression among adolescents and provide appropriate treatment or referral. Finally, the session highlighted current health plan efforts to implement mental health checkups, develop a system of referrals in the primary care practice to facilitate better treatment of mental health issues, and create reimbursement mechanisms for these services.  Please CLICK HERE for an archive of the webinar.


On December 4, 2008 NIHCM Foundation hosted a webinar, "Pediatric Mental Health Care: Strategies to Integrate Early Identification and Treatment into Primary Care."  This webinar explored the current state of mental health services delivered to children during primary care, including a discussion of how mental health parity legislation will affect the future delivery of services in primary care. It also discussed the current guidelines and training opportunities for primary care providers on mental health screening and treatment, including the recently updated Bright Futures guidelines. Finally, the session highlighted current health plan and health plan foundation efforts to support the integration of mental health services into primary care. NIHCM Foundation held a webinar "Encouraging Adolescents' Use of Recommended Health Care Services" on Thursday, August 28, 2008.  This webinar explored current health plan efforts to engage providers and adolescents in order to increase adolescent well-child visit rates and provide age-appropriate preventive care to adolescents.  It also highlighted opportunities for health plans and health care providers to utilize social marketing, the use of commercial marketing principles to change behavior to benefit society and individuals, to promote healthy behaviors among adolescents. Finally, the session explored how mobile technology applications, which are commonly used by adolescents, can be used to send health care reminders to adolescents and improve provider-patient communications outside of the medical setting. Please CLICK HERE for all webinar materials (agenda, presenter biographies, presentations, audio archive).

On August 29, 2007, NIHCM Foundation held its first webinar under the Partners in Program Planning for Adolescent Health (PIPPAH) Project.  The webinar, entitled "Preventing Adult Chronic Disease During Adolescence: The Role of Health Plans," explored the burden of adult chronic disease and primary risk factors among adolescents, and highlighted health plan opportunities to identify adolescents at risk and modify their risk factors through medical evaluation, treatment and counseling.  The session also featured presentations of two promising health plan programs aimed at preventing future chronic disease among adolescents.  An archive of the webinar is available.  Additional webinar materials including a detailed agenda, presentations,  and presenters biographies are available.      


NIHCM Foundation hosted a webinar, "Strategies & Challenges to Reduce Disparities and Ensure Culturally Competent Maternal & Child Health Care," on October 30th, 2006 from 1:00-3:00 (EST), as part of its grant with HRSA's Maternal and Child Health Bureau.  Webinar materials, including a detailed agenda and presenter biographies are available. NIHCM Foundation held a conference, "Closing the Gaps in Health Care for Adolescents," on January 10, 2006 in Washington, D.C., as part of its grant with HRSA's Maternal and Child Health Bureau. Conference materials, including speaker presentations and additional resources on adolescent and young adult health, are available.  An overview paper prepared for the conference is available here


On December 14, 2004, NIHCM Foundation held a forum, "Women's Health: Successes and Challenges in Prevention and Promotion."  An Action Brief summarizing the conference proceedings is now available. An overview paper, "Women's Health Prevention and Promotion," prepared for the forum is also available and highlights current programs and research on successful women's health prevention and treatment options.


On May 13, 2004, NIHCM Foundation held a forum, "Children's Mental Health: New Developments in Policy and Programs." An issue paper, "Children's Mental Health: An Overview and Key Considerations for Health System Stakeholders" produced for the forum is now available and highlights current policy and programs in children's mental health. An Action Brief is also available.
