On September 9, 2010, NIHCM Foundation and WellPoint, Inc. will host a webinar, "Effective Government & Private Sector Initiatives to Address Childhood Obesity." Nearly one in three children in the U.S. are overweight or obese (1). These children face immediate health consequences and are also more likely to be obese as adults. Overweight children are estimated to incur $3 billion in medical expenses on an annual basis and medical spending on obese adults was estimated to be $147 billion in 2008 (2,3). First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative and the commitment to end the epidemic within a generation have brought new attention and momentum to the fight against childhood obesity. As the White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity wrote in its report to the President, “multi-sectoral approaches are needed to address the many behavioral risk factors associated with obesity.” This webinar will bring together various sectors that interact with children and their parents—including health plans, primary care providers, government leaders and community organizations—to share innovative programs and explore multi-sectoral strategies to address the childhood obesity epidemic. On August 17, 2010, NIHCM hosted a webinar, "Adolescent & Young Adult Health in the Post Reform Era." Adolescents and young adults are more likely to be uninsured than any other age group. Implementation of health reform and the reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIPRA) are expected to change this reality by improving affordability and expanding both public and private coverage. This webinar brought together health plans and leaders in the adolescent health community to discuss the impact of health reform and CHIPRA on access to high-quality, confidential health care services for adolescents and young adults. The webinar convened health plans and leaders in the maternal and child health community who shared innovative programs and explored strategies to reduce preterm births and the associated costs. The rise in the rate of preterm births over the past decades was discussed, as well as the relationship between elective inductions and cesarean deliveries to this rise. Representatives from both United Healthcare and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee discussed their programs aimed at reducing premature births and Paul Meyer from Voxiva spoke on the new Text4Baby program which utilizes text messaging to relay important messages about proper healthcare during pregnancy to promote positive birth outcomes. The role of primary care providers in identifying and managing postpartum depression was also discussed and a web-based training program to educate providers on screening, diagnosis, treatment and referral for postpartum depression was shared.
