Sign up to receive new NIHCM publications about insurance coverage and the uninsured by completeing our online subscription form. Working in collaboration with Pennsylvania State University, NIHCM Foundation has produced a new report, Examination of Movements In and Out of Employer-Sponsored Insurance (September 2009). This report describes the continued importance of ESI as the dominant source of coverage among non-elderly people, the relative stability of ESI compared to non-group and public coverage, the difficulty some ESI losers experience in regaining and holding onto insurance, and the importance of ESI as a path out of uninsurance, particularly for those with some recent history of private coverage. The report also investigates paths out of non-coverage for all people, whether uninsured due to loss of ESI or not. With partial funding from the WellPoint Foundation, NIHCM Foundation released a new report, Understanding the Uninsured: Tailoring Policy Solutions for Different Subpopulations, that segments the uninsured according to their eligibility, income and whether they are a child, parent or childless adult. A range of policy options to extend coverage to adults are discussed, as well as options for reaching uninsured young adults and older adults who are not yet eligible for Medicare.
On August 29, 2006, the Census Bureau released it's Current Population Survey (CPS) estimates on the number of uninsured Americans. NIHCM Foundation prepared a Primer on the CPS Estimate in an effort to provide context and perspective. Under a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, NIHCM Foundation prepared an analysis, The Uninsured: A Study of Health Plan Initiatives and the Lessons Learned. The report presents a new analysis and framework for understanding the uninsured population, and examines in depth 13 private health plan initiatives designed to attract uninsured people.
