Congratulations to NIHCM’s 2009 Award Winners

June 17th 2009

In its 15th year, the National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation Health Care Journalism and Research Awards competition received nearly 250 entries. In light of the outstanding caliber of entries, judge Callie Crossley revealed her struggle with "eliminating the wonderful in favor of the wonderful wonderful."

The 2009 winners are:

Television and Radio Journalism

UNNATURAL CAUSES: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?, California Newsreel with Vital Pictures, Executive Producer: Larry Adelman; Co-Executive Producer: Llewellyn Smith; Senior Producer: Christine Herbes-Sommers

UNNATURAL CAUSES combed the nation to show that a person's health is determined by far more than bad habits, health care or unlucky genes. Social, economic and institutional forces are driving the nation's health disparities. The series, first broadcast by PBS, has been used for thousands of organizations across the country to educate and advocate for health equity.

General Circulation Print Journalism

John Carreyrou, Barbara Martinez and Geeta Anand, "Nonprofit Hospitals", The Wall Street Journal

The series revealed exploitive practices among nonprofit hospitals abusing their tax-exempt status while claiming to be "charitable" organizations. The reporting spurred the Senate Finance Committee to propose stricter rules for how much charity care nonprofit hospitals have to provide in order to earn their tax exemption.

Trade Publication Print Journalism

Shelley Wood, "The Myxo Ring Mix-Up", theHeart.org

The series exposed the inadequacies in the FDA drug approval processes for new medical devices and sparked a Congressional investigation.

Research

Chernew ME, Shah MR, Wegh AA, Rosenberg SN, Juster IA, Rosen AB, Sokol MC, Yu-Isenberg K, Fendrick AM. "Impact of Decreasing Copayments on Medication Adherence Within a Disease Management Environment." Health Affairs 2008;27(1):103-112.

Selected unanimously by the judges as the best health services research of the year, the article revealed the potential of reducing copayments on high value pharmaceuticals to alter patient behavior and improve medication adherence.

About the Awards

Established in 1993, the awards program recognizes the talented researchers and journalists who serve as catalysts for positive change by advancing and informing the health care policy debate. NIHCM's President and CEO, Nancy Chockley, explains "The impact these two fields have on our health care system is tremendous and even greater when they learn from each other and work in collaboration to disseminate new insights." To maintain the integrity of the awards, the contests are judged by independent panels of experts.

The winners were honored at NIHCM's Fifteenth Annual Journalism and Research Awards Dinner on June 15 in Washington, DC. The evening also celebrated NIHCM's Fifteenth Anniversary. Founding Chairman of the Board, Leonard Schaeffer, highlighted NIHCM's many achievements in his keynote address.
