David L. Holmberg and Steven Udvarhelyi Join NIHCM Board of Directors, Karen DeSalvo Joins NIHCM Advisory Board
Washington, DC, January 27, 2022 - The National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) is delighted to announce that David L. Holmberg and Dr. Steven Udvarhelyi have joined the NIHCM Board of Directors, and Dr. Karen DeSalvo has joined the NIHCM Advisory Board.
“As public health leaders, David, Steven, and Karen bring an extraordinary breadth of knowledge and vision to NIHCM’s highly-accomplished Board of Directors and Advisory Boards. Their insights and experiences in health care technology, policy, academia, and the health care industry will enrich NIHCM’s efforts to improve health care for all,” said Nancy Chockley, Founding President and CEO of NIHCM.

President and CEO, Highmark Health
Holmberg leads Highmark Health, a $21 billion blended health organization whose 37,000 employees serve millions of customers nationwide through the nonprofit organization’s affiliated businesses, including Highmark Inc., Allegheny Health Network, HM Insurance Group, United Concordia Dental, and HM Health Solutions.
He joined Highmark Inc. in 2007 and served in a series of executive positions, including president of its Diversified Businesses, where he was responsible for businesses representing more than $3.5 billion in revenue, chief executive officer for HVHC Inc. and chief executive officer and chairman for HM Insurance Group, United Concordia Dental and San Antonio, Texas-based Visionworks, which was divested in 2016 for $1.6 billion.
Steven Udvarhelyi, MD
President and CEO, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana
Dr. Steven Udvarhelyi joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana as President and Chief Executive Officer in 2016. He is a board-certified internist and has more than 25 years of experience in the health insurance industry.
Prior to joining Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, Dr. Udvarhelyi was with Independence Blue Cross (IBC) in Philadelphia for almost 20 years, last serving as executive vice president, health services and chief strategy officer. Before IBC, he worked for Prudential Health Care in a variety of roles, including vice president, operations for Florida and vice president, medical services.

Karen DeSalvo, MD, MPH
Chief Health Officer, Google
Karen DeSalvo, MD, MPH, is the Chief Health Officer of Google, where she leads a team of health professionals who provide guidance for the development of health research, products, and services across the company. Dr. DeSalvo is a physician who has focused her career on improving access to affordable, high-quality care for all, especially vulnerable populations, and promoting overall health.
A former Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. DeSalvo was also the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, where she set high level policy and the strategic direction of the office, including efforts related to interoperability. She is a former professor of Population Health at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School and vice dean for Community Affairs and Health Policy at the Tulane School of Medicine where she was a practicing internal medicine physician.
