NIHCM Foundation Announces $1M Journalism Grant Program
Washington, DC – June 10, 2014 - NIHCM Foundation is launching a new grant program with the intention of awarding $1 million over the next five years to support health care journalism. NIHCM Chairman Brad Wilson introduced the initiative at the Foundation’s 20th Annual Journalism and Research Awards Dinner on June 2nd.
The grants will have two goals: to inform efforts to improve the health of Americans through education and raising awareness, and to examine emerging health issues and their implications for cost, quality and access.
“For 20 years now, we’ve watched the winners of our journalism award changing policy and changing lives for the better,” said NIHCM President and CEO, Nancy Chockley. "Our goal for these grants is to help sustain and extend that positive impact in a way that respects the editorial independence of organizations we fund.”
This new grant initiative was inspired in part by NIHCM’s thriving investigator-initiated research grant program, introduced in 2012. “The model for our research grant program is ‘bring us your best ideas.’ We trust the ingenuity of the researchers, and the proposals so far have been fantastic,” said Ms. Chockley.
NIHCM is currently in discussion with possible journalism grantees, including nonpartisan news outlets, documentary filmmakers and reporting fellowship programs, and welcomes inquiries from interested organizations. Funding decisions will be made on an ongoing basis.
