Too Much Imaging: The Cost of Inappropriate Diagnostics - New Research Insights

With more than $100 billion spent every year in the US for diagnostic imaging, inappropriate use of these procedures could amount to big dollars - and potentially harm patients. New research found significant levels of inappropriate use of MRIs and X-rays, relative to clinical guidelines, for certain common conditions. This Research Insights summarizes the findings by NIHCM grantee Gary Young and colleagues from their analysis of diagnostic imaging claims for privately insured patients with back, knee and shoulder pain.
